Q Week 13 Discussion 2: Aesthetic Journal Resources Read/review the following resources for this activity: • See groups below Introduction Over the course of the semester, you need to experience 5 of the following events/activities and document your account for your classmates in the discussions when scheduled. There is no order in which you must complete these assignments so choose those which will conveniently fit into your schedule and/or geographic location. Your accounts need not be formal. Initial Post Instructions Choose events from the appropriate categories below (or perhaps you will have an idea for something not listed below – the list is not exhaustive and this assignment is negotiable!) You may also choose to experience “fine art” or “popular art” as both genres are equally acceptable. This journal post should be an opportunity to challenge yourself to experience something new; something that you might not ordinarily consider. When scheduled, post your reaction to the event and share any insights, perspectives, or just facts you have gained from the experience. Make sure you include observations from your experience as they relate to the theories and philosophies we may have covered to date. Approach this with a sense of fun and adventure and have a good time! We shall look forward to hearing about your experience. The following are the Groups in which you can choose from for each journal post: GROUP A (choose 2 or 3) • Attend a concert • Attend a play • Visit an artist’s studio for at least an hour • Watch musicians, singers, dancers, or actors during a rehearsal • Attend a dance program • Visit an art gallery or museum • Visit a historical museum • Attend a martial arts exhibition • Visit a statue, sculpture, or light display • Visit a live musical rehearsal • Visit a famous local building or landmark • Attend a poetry or book reading • Attend a craft workshop or exhibition • Attend an arts festival or fair GROUP B (Choose 1 or 2) • Read a novel you have never read before • Compare two different art magazines • Read a biography or watch a documentary about an artist’s life • Watch a movie you have never seen before • Watch a recorded music or theatre performance • Listen to a radio program • Evaluate some Non-Western artistic activity GROUP C (choose 1) • Read a poem • Take a virtual art museum tour • Consider a television commercial • Research an artist previously unknown to you • Find an artistic angle in a political message • Evaluate artistic components of a video game Secondary Post Instructions Respond to at least one peer and provide a substantive response to his/her postings. ________________________________________ Writing Requirements • In addition to one initial post, respond to one peer • Initial Post Length: minimum of 300 words • Secondary Post Length: minimum of 300 words per post • Use MLA format for in-text citations and list of references. ________________________________________ Grading and Assessment Meeting the minimum number of postings does not guarantee an A; you must present an in-depth discussion of high quality, integrate sources to support your assertions, and refer to peers’ comments in your secondary posts to build on concepts. Due Date for Initial Post: By midnight on Wednesday Due Date for Response Post: By midnight on Sunday
